CONFERENCE "Fake news in the aquaculture sector"

Italy is the first producer of trout and clams in Europe and the consumption of aquaculture products in our country has already exceeded 50% even if most of it is imported. Because? Is the Italian origin enough to say that a national fish product is of higher quality? Surely we must increase and improve the information relating to our fish production but also the perception that consumers have of the farmed fish product. Furthermore, the parameters that really represent the concrete, verifiable and measurable quality of the products will be increasingly delineated in order to offer greater transparency in communication and information addressed to the consumer so that he can really make a more informed and responsible choice. Event organized by EuroFish Market in collaboration with MIPAAF and SEALOGY®.

Moderator: Valentina Tepedino - EFM

When: Friday 19 November

Where: Sala Maestrale - MIPAAF institutional area - Pavilion 3

Hours: 2.30pm - 5.30pm

Blue Labs Ocean Literacy "MACROZOOBENTHOS, resource and indicator of the state of the lagoons"

The activity aims to introduce macrozoobenthos to high school students to understand the role of the benthic community in the lagoon ecosystem and its relationship with fishing. The macrozoobenthos is, in fact, a source of nourishment for many fish species, includes some species of commercial interest and can undergo the direct and indirect effects of some specific fishing activities. The indirect effects also include pollution caused by antifouling paints used on boat hulls which can cause hormonal imbalances in some species of sea snails (imposex). The proposals will concern:

1) recognition of the major taxonomic groups of the macrozoobenthic community for the study of biodiversity according to the possible impacts of fishing; in-depth study of some species of commercial interest;

2) evaluation of the imposex phenomenon as an indirect effect on species of commercial interest.

Type of activities that will be carried out:

- MACROZOOBENTHOS: Brief introduction on the role of macrozoobenthos. Practical laboratory activities of fresh sample preparation and recognition of major taxonomic groups through microscope observation and simplified dichotomous keys. Practical demonstrations of biometric measurements commonly used for assessing the status of the resource will be carried out on some species of commercial interest. Conclusion with a brief study on the effects of fishing on the biodiversity of the macrozoobenthos and the lagoon ecosystem.

Duration: 90 minutes

- IMPOSEX: Brief introduction on the phenomenon of imposex. laboratory activity for the recognition of target species, detection of biometric measurements on fresh samples, identification of the phenomenon of imposex and its severity through observation under the microscope. Conclusion with a brief study on the effects of imposex on sea snail populations and the lagoon ecosystem.

Duration: 60 minutes

When: November 18, 2021

Time: 10.00 - 12.30

15.00 - 17.30

Participants: SMS students - 10/12 boys / girls in the morning and 10/12 boys / girls in the afternoon

How to participate: for schools it is necessary to send an email to: support@sealogy.it specifying the number of students / classes who would like to participate in the initiative.

Blue Labs "Why does Europe count waste on the beach?"

Game / Workshop on European monitoring of beached marine litter.

The European Directive for the Marine Strategy represents an important tool for the protection of the marine ecosystem, including a series of actions that all member states have committed to apply in eleven different areas, including marine litter. Although they share the same objectives and the same methods of monitoring the state of the sea, the European states are very different from each other in terms not only environmental, climatic and graphical, but also economic and social (just think that in northern Europe most of the waste is linked to commercial fishing, while in the southern states disposable products are the most frequent). The great mobility of waste at sea makes the comparison and collaboration between countries crucial, even those not belonging to the European Union. In this sense, the actions of four different “regional conventions”, which bring together the countries bordering the different European seas, must be taken into consideration. As well as other European policies that involve the same issues and national policies must be considered.

The monitoring of stranded waste, one of the many activities envisaged by the Directive, will be used as a case study to understand and experience the complexity of the implementation of European initiatives. The workshop is structured as a role-playing game in which the students, gathered in small groups, will interpret different “sample” Member States using simple information cards provided as support.

With the help of the ISPRA researchers, the groups will carry out a simulated monitoring following a standardized protocol. Furthermore, they will be able to discuss the results obtained, and any actions they want to implement to counter the problem, discussing with the other groups on the characteristics, problems and needs of the country they interpret.

Type of activities that will be carried out:

Lesson and explanation of the game / laboratory, simulation of beached waste sampling, facilitated discussion.

When: Thursday 18 and Friday 19 November 2021

Time: 15.00 - 18.00

Duration: 3h

Participants: SMS students - 10/12 boys / day

How to participate: for schools it is necessary to send an email to: support@sealogy.it specifying the number of students / classes who would like to participate in the initiative.
